Research Skills

This week we have been working well on developing research skills. These skills will support us in all of our lifelong learning. We are now familiar with the following ways to research:
1. speak to someone who knows about the topic
2. read a book (Epic online books)
3. Look at Kiddle.com
4. Look at Google images of the thing you want to know about
5. Search for a short documentary

When we have the information in front of us, the next step is to use it wisely. Previously, we tended to copy, but we have been talking about why that is unacceptable. Everything we write now is expressed in our own words.

The information we researched was then presented in an information report.  Presenting the work as a Google document was interesting because we had a chance to use 'voice typing'. It is thrilling to speak to the screen and see spoken words appearing as text!

It has been particularly interesting learning about the rites of passage of other cultures. We’ve seen that almost every culture has some kind of custom to welcome a baby into the community, another custom to mark the beginning of adulthood, a special celebration of marriage and another to mark the end of life.

As well as reading a non-fiction to research rites of passage, we’ve also been reading a very engaging narrative about a native American girl who was separated from her family and sent off to boarding school away from her own culture. The detailed account of how the girl ‘lost her spirit’ has really made a big impact on some of us. The heart of the story is the fact that there are occasions when culture is suppressed and actively stamped out. The story left us with much to talk about, particularly the attitudes of empathy and tolerance.

Math Week 7

Last weeks assessment on subtracting with large numbers went very well. Students created their own word problems and exchanged them with a partner to solve. This week we focus on equations using addition and subtraction, word problems and adding decimals. Please check the communication book daily for math homework or tests to be signed. Thanks, Robb Langridge

Monday - 3 minute mental math, review, adding and subtracting large numbers, word problems addition Bingo. Gaffee and Moriah continue to work on problem solving.

Tuesday - Adding and subtracting using large numbers involving more than one operation. Example:
6787400 + 3546782 - 2567341 = ? Moriah and Gafee, problem solving test. adding 3 and 4 digit numbers

Wednesday - problem solving questions with more than one operation, addition and subtraction. Moriah and Gaffee. Calculations with 3 and 4 digit numbers using addition and subtraction in same equation. Example: 4367 + 9876 - 2345 = ?

Thursday: Inquiry research, comparing populations, World Top Ten, find the difference in population between two or more countries.. Take up problem solving questions. Gaffee Moriah, take up problem solving using addition quiz.  Continue adding, subtracting 4 digit numbers in same equation.

Friday - Assessment, adding subtracting in same equation using large numbers, and word problems.

End of Unit

This week we came to the end of our unit of inquiry on cultural beliefs and values. Back in August we had very little understanding about how culture impacts beliefs and values. However, as the weeks went by we engaged in many learning activities. The first of these was interviewing teachers to ask for their input on a definition of culture. We went on to watch mini-documentaries, read several information books and speak to people who could teach us about their culture. As a concluding activity, we came together as a class to produce a joint video which describes some essential points of cultures which we are interested in. This was an exercise in collaborating on a project and exercising social skills. As you can imagine, there was a lot of research to do, and so we had a good opportunity to put into practice all we have been learning about how to conduct research. We now have no reason to use 'copy & paste' ! Heres a link to our work: The highlight of this week h...

Year 6 Term 2 Week 3 Blog

English Class This week in English class the learners continued reading their guiding reading books. One group complete "The Chalk Box Kid" by Clyde Robert Bulla and will be assigned to a new guided reading book next week. The learners also worked on writing sentences using their spelling words and writing stories that highlighted their spelling words in their story. This is to enhance the written vocabulary that the learners are using within their writing. As part of their PSPE theme this week (Teamwork) the learners worked together to solve various riddles. For next week the learners will be working on writing reflections based on current events and building their skills in use of conjunctions.  Maths Class In Maths class this week the learners completed their unit on measurements. The learners worked on units of measurement for mass this week. The learners completed an assessment as part of their unit wrap up. To finish off the unit we also had ...

Rites of passage

Rites of passage Continuing with our unit of inquiry on culture, we have been looking into the rites of passage of various cultures. Here is the video we began with. Whatever culture we belong to there will be rites of passage that we all experience. As you probably seen, the classroom has many colourful images relating to culture. This week, we all chose one and researched the rites of passage of that culture. We have been learning that Kiddle is a good place to research from because the results are child friendly. Epic books also has good resources to read.  A key point of our learning this week has been looking into the features of an information report. Indeed there are several kinds of writing, all with different purposes, and so during the course of the year we are spending time with each of them. An, Epic books was helpful because it provided a beautiful explanation of how to write an information report. As an example of what ours might look like, the teac...
