Year 6 Term 1 Week 3 Blog

In English class the students worked in guided reading groups this week. One group will be reading "The Hatchet" by Gary Paulsen and the second group will be reading Charlotte's Web by E.B. White.  In addition, the students work on their assembly and practiced performing their skit in preparation.

In Maths class the students continued their unit on rounding, estimation and place value. The students are beginning to realise that there is a close link between these three concepts. This week the students took part in both group activities as well as individual learning activities.

In UOI the students have focused on the "sorting out" stage of the inquiry cycle to determine which information they will be using in their presentations on "culture" that they have been researching about.

In our Puberty unit the students have been thinking with an inquiry mindset. At first the students were a little nervous and apprehensive to take part in the question and discussion sessions. However, during our third lesson the students began to feel more confident in asking questions that they were curious about. Some of the children may feel comfortable enough at home to come to you with some more questions or to discuss what they have learned about this week. Please encourage them that puberty is a natural process that all people go through in life.

The Science of Gardening

Term 3 Week 1 : The Science of Gardening This week we have been excitedly planning how to get the school vegetable garden back into a productive state. We’re tying this into our unit of inquiry on scientific developments. Central Idea : Scientific knowledge is constantly evolving and has an impact on people's lives. During this inquiry students are each taking on various aspects of developing our school vegetable patch. They are forming scientific questions related to the garden and applying a simple form of the scientific process. 1. Ask a question 2. Predict an answer. 3. Create a test to find the answer. (observe, measure, compare) 4. Share the findings. The biggest question on our minds so far is how to keep the soil watered when we are away over the holidays. This will probably involve creating some simple machines to do the job. Students are reading about solutions to this issue. At the moment we’re not very knowledgeable about gardening, and...
