Developing Our Inquiry Skills

This week a lot of attention has been given to conducting research on a culture of our own choice. This involved a good amount of reading from reference books and informative websites. The information gathered was presented as an information report. This is the genre of writing we have worked a lot on in recent weeks.

All of the finding out we have been doing on cultural values is going to be presented digitally too. This is something we are presently working on. It will be ready next week and we'll share it with this blog.

We also continued with the very touching story of 'Red Bird', the native American girl who suffered through years of having to deny her own culture and live another life. We made lots of connections with the character through considering her feelings. This helped us develop in the area of empathy. The other area attribute we developed in is tolerance. The characters in the story did not show tolerance towards 'Red Bird' We have had conversations about the fact that these are two particular character traits that we are responsible for developing.

Next week we will be celebrating Book Week. We'd really like to see some photos for the 'Extreme Reading Challenge.'

Next Thursday we will be going to the Chinese Cultural Centre near U.D Town. Our Chinese teacher is going to accompany us so that we have someone to discuss this culture with.

Geography geniuses

This week we have been continuing on with our unit on migration. In order to do this properly we need to know the world map well. We have given a fair amount of time to learning the names of the oceans and continents. The most enjoyable activity was using Google earth to find the places we are learning about.  We even used 'Google Glasses' to watch 3D clips of far off places too. In our English lessons we have been reading about the migration experiences of young people. Our purpose was to do 'active reading'. This means that we have to think, take notes and talk to someone was we read. In this way, we understand the text more deeply. On Wednesday Our P.E teacher came to share his migration experience with us. He is Brazilian and taught us some basic facts about his country. It developed into a whole geography lesson about Brazil. We learned about how big Brazil is! Mr. Xavi told us about the Amazon jungle. we had so many questions to ask him. ...
