Year 6 Term 2 Week 1 Blog

English

This week in English class the students worked on their initial Term 2 writing assessments. Furthermore, the students were responsible for reading various articles online about some of the conflicts that arise when humans and animals coexist in the same living environment.

For next week, the students will be grouped into new guided reading groups and will be assigned to begin reading a new chapter book or novel that I have selected for their groups. The students will be working on several different writing tasks and learning about prepositions.

4. What makes a person want to invent something?

In UOI class the students are in the Going Further stage and have been completing their presentation on
famous inventors and inventions in history. The students have been coming up with some ideas of things
they can create out of simple household items.

For next week, we will continue to work on these same concepts as well as carry on with our exhibition projects.
The students are now being given specific checklist to complete on a weekly or biweekly basis to keep
them on track to complete their projects in time.

*It is imperative that the Year 6 students take a greater responsibility to work on their projects at home as part of their homework. Many students have not been completing any exhibition work at all at home which will prove to be an issue for them when it comes time to present to their peers, parents and the rest of the school if they can not complete their work in time. Parents please stress the importance of this project and the importance of completing homework for class each week.

Math

In class this week we began our new unit on units of measurement which consist of (length, volume, mass, and temperature) This week the students learned how to measure lengths by using millimetres, centimetres, meters, and kilometres.

For next week the students will continue with this same unit but focus on measuring liquids by volume, weight by mass and temperature by centigrade.

End of Unit

This week we came to the end of our unit of inquiry on cultural beliefs and values. Back in August we had very little understanding about how culture impacts beliefs and values. However, as the weeks went by we engaged in many learning activities. The first of these was interviewing teachers to ask for their input on a definition of culture. We went on to watch mini-documentaries, read several information books and speak to people who could teach us about their culture. As a concluding activity, we came together as a class to produce a joint video which describes some essential points of cultures which we are interested in. This was an exercise in collaborating on a project and exercising social skills. As you can imagine, there was a lot of research to do, and so we had a good opportunity to put into practice all we have been learning about how to conduct research. We now have no reason to use 'copy & paste' ! Heres a link to our work: The highlight of this week h...

Rites of passage

Rites of passage Continuing with our unit of inquiry on culture, we have been looking into the rites of passage of various cultures. Here is the video we began with. Whatever culture we belong to there will be rites of passage that we all experience. As you probably seen, the classroom has many colourful images relating to culture. This week, we all chose one and researched the rites of passage of that culture. We have been learning that Kiddle is a good place to research from because the results are child friendly. Epic books also has good resources to read.  A key point of our learning this week has been looking into the features of an information report. Indeed there are several kinds of writing, all with different purposes, and so during the course of the year we are spending time with each of them. An, Epic books was helpful because it provided a beautiful explanation of how to write an information report. As an example of what ours might look like, the teac...

In English class this week the students have been preparing for their presentations on "passions" that they will presenting to other classes at UDIS. We also had a guest speaker come to speak with the Year 6 &7 class today about his passion of coding. The students learned about the effort that goes into creating video games and robots. In Maths class the students have been introduced to the concept of "Statistics" and how to find the mean, median and mode of number samples. In UOI class the students have been working on updating their Exhibition journals. The students are beginning to explore and gain a deeper knowledge about their passions and how they are choosing to focus on their projects.
