Year 6 Term 2 Week 6 Blog

English

In English class the learners worked in small groups to write a narrative story that they could then role play and act out for their peers. The learners also began reading in their groups to begin a new guided reading book. For next week the students will be working on learning different forms of poetry.

Maths

In Maths class this week the learners began working on new concepts. This unit will carry into next week before they are assessed on these skills next Thursday.

Green Group:
  • Calculate the area of parallelograms and triangles.
  • Recognise that shapes with the same areas can have different perimeters and vice versa.

Yellow Group
  • Calculate the area of parallelograms and triangles.
  • Recognise that shapes with the same areas can have different perimeters and vice versa.
  • Calculate, estimate and compare volume of cubes and cuboids using standard units,
including cubic centimetres (cm3) and cubic metres (m3), and extending to other units

UOI

For this week and the next several weeks the learners will be working on the following learning tasks in UOI class.

Year 6 Unit 4 Checklist Sharing the Planet 2019/2020

Key Concepts: causation, connection, responsibility  Related Concepts: balance, biodiversity, interdependence

What lines of inquiry will define the scope of the inquiry into the central idea?

Ways in which ecosystems, biomes and environments are interdependent.
How human interaction with the environment can affect the balance of systems.
The consequences of imbalance within ecosystems.

Google Slides Presentation Expectations
First Step
  • Investigate (1) animal that has come in conflict with humans for each of the following continents.
    • Asia
    • Europe
    • North America
    • South America
    • Australia
    • Africa
    • * (Bonus points if you can find any human/animal conflicts for Antarctica)
Step 2
  • At this point, you should have selected a total of 5-6 animal/human conflicts of which
represent each continent. You should only have 1 animal/human conflict for each continent
listed above.
  • Begin documenting your findings in a Google Doc and reflect on why these conflicts are
taking place in these parts of the world.

Step 3
  • Begin formulating some ideas and solutions to these human/animal conflicts that are affecting
biodiversity around the world.
  • Reflect on how people and animals can coexist in the same living environment without conflict.
  • Begin collecting images of the human/animal conflict and any possible solutions that you can
find.

Step 4)
  • As your final step begins, you will work to create an ebook that is reflective of your knowledge
and shows all of your findings and information that you have documented through your research.
  • Create a slide in your portfolio and add a link to your ebook to share with your parents during
the Student-Led Conferences.

Homework

Due to half term break and the shortened week when we return there will be no assigned homework or spelling assessment for the week of February 17th-21st. However, the learners may take this time to work on their portfolios which will be using during the Student Led Conferences and the exhibition journals.

End of Unit

This week we came to the end of our unit of inquiry on cultural beliefs and values. Back in August we had very little understanding about how culture impacts beliefs and values. However, as the weeks went by we engaged in many learning activities. The first of these was interviewing teachers to ask for their input on a definition of culture. We went on to watch mini-documentaries, read several information books and speak to people who could teach us about their culture. As a concluding activity, we came together as a class to produce a joint video which describes some essential points of cultures which we are interested in. This was an exercise in collaborating on a project and exercising social skills. As you can imagine, there was a lot of research to do, and so we had a good opportunity to put into practice all we have been learning about how to conduct research. We now have no reason to use 'copy & paste' ! Heres a link to our work: The highlight of this week h...

This is to enhance the written vocabulary that the learners are using within their writing. As part of their PSPE theme this week (Teamwork) the learners worked together to solve various riddles. For next week the learners will be working on writing reflections based on current events and building their skills in use of conjunctions.  Maths Class In Maths class this week the learners completed their unit on measurements. The learners worked on units of measurement for mass this week. The learners completed an assessment as part of their unit wrap up. To finish off the unit we also had ...

Rites of passage

Rites of passage Continuing with our unit of inquiry on culture, we have been looking into the rites of passage of various cultures. Here is the video we began with. Whatever culture we belong to there will be rites of passage that we all experience. As you probably seen, the classroom has many colourful images relating to culture. This week, we all chose one and researched the rites of passage of that culture. We have been learning that Kiddle is a good place to research from because the results are child friendly. Epic books also has good resources to read.  A key point of our learning this week has been looking into the features of an information report. Indeed there are several kinds of writing, all with different purposes, and so during the course of the year we are spending time with each of them. An, Epic books was helpful because it provided a beautiful explanation of how to write an information report. As an example of what ours might look like, the teac...
